Hazards Technical Working Group

Introduction

Idaho has a number of natural hazards, such as flooding, drought and avalanches. Having the best available data for those hazards allows Idaho’s Citizens and Public Agencies to plan for and mitigate those hazards.

Vision

Idaho will have a comprehensive GIS dataset for hazards in Idaho that are authoritative, best available, and use communication best practices. The datasets will be accessible so that Idaho public agencies can use them for mitigation planning and the creation of products that help the public understand and prepare for potential hazards. Our vision also includes a vibrant, collaborative community of professionals working on hazard related issues in Idaho, fostering collaboration and coordination.

Goals

We will implement the vision by

• Identifying crucial hazard datasets and developing the framework around those datasets, such as standards, sharing agreements, stewardship plans, and funding mechanisms
• Identifying key stakeholders working with hazard data and hazard mitigation, and providing a forum to collaborate and coordinate
• Support outreach to the public about hazards and hazard mitigation strategies
