Human Interest GIS Technical Working Group

This new Human Interest (or ‘People’) theme would is the latest addition to the Idaho Framework Themes (see picture below). Each theme has a TWG associated with it with people that create and use data within each theme.

One of the first goals of this TWG is to identify (spatial) datasets that should be included in the Human Interest theme.  Candidate datasets could be a variety of data layers related to various demographic information or the location of facilities that relate to human welfare, health and safety such as the location of schools, libraries, hospitals, pharmacies, doctors, etc.  I would like to talk about what the needs are, and which datasets addressing those needs would be considered authoritative, or best available.

For those authoritative datasets I think it will be interesting to have the source talk about how the dataset is created, and how it is being used. I think this will also allow for a chance for all of us to learn more about those datasets and network with others in the state working with similar data.

Once identified, the next steps are to develop a standard (including how it relates to other standards), ensure complete metadata and have that standard and a nomination for that dataset approved by the Idaho Geospatial Council Executive Committee to be included in “The Idaho Map” (TIM).  TIM is the nickname for the Idaho Spatial Data Infrastructure that includes those recommended authoritative (or if there is no authoritative dataset, then best available) datasets, standards, data owners, data sharing agreements (if needed), infrastructure and an Open Data site.
